Robin Day 675 Chair

This spring, The Conran Shop will unveil a Special Edition 675 Chair, created in an exclusive collaboration with Case. This classic Robin Day design, newly upholstered in three heritage colours of Mourne Check fabric by Mourne Textiles, is part of a limited collection of 150 chairs, split evenly between the three colourways.

The iconic 675 chair, first designed by Robin Day in 1952, is one of the most recognised chairs of the 20th century, winning the acclaimed Design Guild Mark Award in 2015. Reverted to its more compact, original dimensions by the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation in collaboration with Case, the 675 chair was made famous by its curved moulded plywood back and armrests. Day overcame the difficulty of forming a single moulded plywood chair with adjoining armrests by innovatively bending one piece to perform the two functions. From this, the inimitable, mid-century essence of the 675 chair was born, balancing sculptural beauty with superior comfort and support. With its modernist form and innovative structure, Robin Day’s 675 chair is a design that has certainly stood the test of time.

This 2017 Special Edition 675 Chair, composed of a walnut plywood backrest and black steel frame, is complemented with three original heritage colours of Mourne Check upholstery: robin, bilberry and granite. Mourne Check, the signature fabric that Day favoured during his time designing furniture, was created in collaboration with Gerd Hay-Edie, designer and founder of Mourne Textiles in Ireland. A durable linen, wool and cotton mix still woven on traditional hand looms dating back to the 1950s, Mourne Check is a refined material that reinforces the timeless quality of the 675 chair.

The Conran Shop has always been an advocate for revisiting renowned pieces and enhancing them with a contemporary element, as showcased by the 2017 Special Edition Robin Day 675 Chair. By reimagining the classic Robin Day 675 Chair with new, heritage fabric upholstery, The Conran Shop continues to champion innovation and new talent, while honouring the timelessness of original design icons.
